BHUBANESWARTata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has officially launched its residential rooftop solar solutions across Odisha. The company is introducing a new Unified LoA (Letter of Award) Application (ULA) model aimed at simplifying the entire process for consumers, from application to subsidy disbursement, making the switch to solar energy more accessible for homeowners. This move supports the national goal of increasing renewable energy in Odisha.

Streamlining Solar Adoption with the ULA Model

A significant barrier for many potential solar customers has been the complex, multi-step process involving approvals and subsidy claims. The new ULA model solar framework introduced by Tata Power in collaboration with the state’s distribution companies (discoms) is designed to address this challenge directly.

According to a statement from Tata Power, the ULA model consolidates three key processes into a single application:

  • The Letter of Award (LoA) from the discom.
  • The application for the central government’s solar power subsidy.
  • The application for net-metering, which allows consumers to sell surplus power back to the grid.

“By unifying these applications, we are significantly reducing the paperwork and processing time for our customers,” said a spokesperson for TPREL. “Our goal is to create a seamless, one-stop-shop experience for anyone in Odisha looking to go solar.”

This streamlined approach is expected to encourage wider adoption by removing bureaucratic hurdles and providing greater clarity to consumers from the outset.

Financial Incentives and Subsidy Benefits

The launch of Tata Power rooftop solar Odisha is aligned with the subsidy scheme available on the National Portal for Rooftop Solar, managed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). This scheme provides significant financial assistance to residential consumers, making the initial investment more manageable.

Under the current national policy, homeowners are eligible for a direct subsidy based on the capacity of their solar system.

  • For systems between 1 kilowatt (kW) and 3 kW, the subsidy can cover a substantial portion of the benchmark cost.
  • For systems larger than 3 kW and up to 10 kW, the subsidy amount is tiered.

Tata Power has confirmed it will facilitate the entire subsidy claim process for its customers through the ULA model, ensuring the benefit is directly transferred to the consumer’s bank account by the MNRE. In addition to the subsidy, the company is offering flexible financing options to further reduce the upfront financial burden on homeowners.

“A typical residential customer can expect to save up to 50% on their electricity bills and achieve payback on their investment in just four to five years,” the company stated in its official press release.

Expanding Renewable Energy in Odisha

This initiative is a significant step towards advancing the adoption of renewable energy in Odisha. By partnering with the state’s four discoms—TP Central Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPCODL), TP Western Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPWODL), TP Northern Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPNODL), and TP Southern Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPSODL)—Tata Power ensures its solar solutions are available to a vast network of over 9 million consumers across the state.

Experts believe that simplifying the adoption process is as crucial as financial incentives for achieving ambitious renewable energy targets.

“The ULA model is a positive development that addresses consumer pain points,” said Anjali Verma, an independent energy analyst. “Making the process transparent and easy to navigate is key to unlocking the massive potential of residential rooftop solar, not just in Odisha but across India.”

Tata Power has already commissioned over 2 gigawatts (GW) of rooftop solar systems across India, and this focused campaign in Odisha is part of its broader strategy to expand its green energy portfolio. The company will manage the entire lifecycle for the customer, from the initial survey and installation to maintenance and service.
